I just got one, unlike all my friends who got one four years ago, and all my friends have ringtones from a part of a popular song. I tried finding some free ones online on websites that I had to tell my number to so they could send it to me, but that seems really sketchy. Is that the way most people do it?

Well, i am not very experienced with phones but i do know that the phone companies website, such as verizon, should have ringtones that you can buy on there. That seems to be the most safe option, although it does cost money. hope i helped

Depending upon what type of phone you have, you can use anything from drag-and-drop into the ringtones folder of your phone to Activesync for HTC phones to a hacked bios and special software to add them.
If you have a smart phone, you can get the proper browsing software from their website and just add the songs via your computer (or phone file explorer program) to the ringtones folder.
If you have something like a Razr, you might need to mod the operating system or at the very least, download a few hacks to get access to the ringtones folder.
You can also have them sent to your phone via email or text messages that are MMS.
A lot of websites are scams, but I’ve seen some good ones that text you the ringtones you make. Some have to be 20 seconds or less, etc.
Without knowing the type of phone, I can’t help you better.
